Integrity

There was a nasty jumps fall at Sandown yesterday. There are a series of photos taken by Getty Images which show the horse nose diving and about to crash to the ground. Facebook of course lit up with debate about whether the images should have been taken and then published.

However in order to be meaningful Photojournalism must be truthful.  Integrity is so important. Photojournalism, done well, keeps our eyes and ears open. We mightn't always like it. But you can't dodge the downsides.  Yes. There was a fall in the jumps race yesterday. Yes. There was an injury, a bad one which resulted in the horse being put down. Was the decision of the photographer and the newspapers to publish, and tell the truth, the right one?  Yes. I believe it absolutely was.
